Yet Another Invader of Our Fly Fishing Rivers

Chinese Mitten Crab

Again fly fishermen are being asked to look for another invader of our fly fishing rivers. We have had the cray fish which has been decimated by the American signal crayfish, more recently Dikerogammarus villosus a visious shrimp which often kills its prey and leaves it uneaten was found in Grafham Water now we have Chinese Mitten Crabs! These have been around for a while, they have been found in the Yorkshire Region at Castleford in 1948 yet they are now spreading and while fly fishing we are being asked to watch out for these invaders and report them for monitoring. The Full Press Release has stated: Become a nature detective and record the invasion of the alien Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) in rivers of England and Wales. Scientists from a number of UK research institutes, including London’s Natural History Museum are calling for the public to become nature detectives this autumn to better understand the full extent of the Chinese mitten crab invasion and the threat these crustaceans pose to our rivers and waterways. Anglers, waterway workers, boating enthusiasts and other nature lovers to identify and record any sightings of the alien species via an online survey. The [...]

River in Flood

Well we had hoped to do some kick sampling yesterday.  There we were, all kitted up and with our kick sampling tools ready and our photographer Si with us too for those ace photos we were going to take!  We were hoping to get pictures of the local entomology for our studies and for sharing with our customers.  That way we all know whats out there currently for our fly tying. So we headed off to the river Wharfe in Tadcaster North Yorkshire.  This is a beautiful river, really picturesque with a weir and viaduct over it -worthy of many lovely photos. Even the company dog Tess was excited about this trip! We knew it had rained a bit recently, but in all honesty it wasn’t that bad. But when we got to the river we were amazed!  To say it was in flood is a bit of an understatement.  It was at least 6 ft up – the weir was not visible at all apart from some ‘waves’ where the weir should have been.  It was almost covering the trees too! So, the trip we were all looking forward to had to be cancelled so we simply headed off [...]

Emporer Dragonfly Close-up copyright www.theessentialfly.com

On Friday Sandy Dickson and Andy went to Knaresborough to the local trout lake for a spot of relaxation from the busy world at The Essential Fly. While there Sandy spotted this beautiful Emperor dragonfly that had just emerged. We took photo’s and video of this beautiful dragonfly as it pumped blood into its’ wings and then flew off. This is HD quality video and can be seen below or on our Facebook pages for fly fishing. Dragon fly nymphs or damsel nymphs play an important part in the trout fly fishing fisherman’s hobby. Although we see a few of these superb damsels / dragonflies darting about the lakes we often do not appreciate that trout feast on damsel nymphs in the lake and trout flies imitating this are an important part of the fly fishing armoury. Emperor Dragonfly Emerging More Abut The Dragonfly A dragonfly is an insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta or, in the strict sense, the infraorder Anisoptera. New guide to fly fishing with buzzers available from www.theessentialfly.com

“One of the best indicators of recent buzzer activity is to look for floating shucks or adult buzzers on or near the water. Certain areas will hold fish and buzzers, these being the obvious places to start. “

Caddis Fly – An Important Fly For Fly Fishermen

The Caddis fly, (Trichopetra) or sedges can be found anywhere there is fresh water. These are important flies for fly fishermen. The drab coloured adults are moth-like however their body and wings are covered with hairs. Another distinguisihing feature is that the caddis do not have a coiled proboscis. Their wings are held over the body in a tent like fashion. Mostly nocturnal, the adults hide in vegetation during the hours of daylight and are hard to find. Mating takes place at dusk, either in flight or on vegetation. Their bodies range in size from 2mm to 28mm (1.25 inches)…………….

Pheasant Tail Nymph – the closest you can get to a fly for all seasons

The Pheasant Tail nymphs remains one of the most popular and widely used nymphs world-wide. There is no fly that is a “fly for all seasons” as we have to match the hatch which varies all year, however as most sub-surface food lives close to #the bottom# the weighted Pheasant Tail is probably the closest you can get to a fly for all seasons…………
