The Elk Hair Caddis Tan is based on the Elk Hair Caddis Tan created by Al Troth. Elk Hair Caddis Tan The Elk Hair Caddis Tan developed by Al Trout was originally used in the American Northwest with a great deal of success and is now used world-wide. This is a superb imitation of an adult caddis fly which rather than imitate a particular species of caddis uses a roof wing profile to mimic a whole range of medium to small brown caddis flies. The wing is made of Elk hair which is tough but retains good buoyancy. As the name indicates dry flies which include Elk Hair Caddis Tan are designed to float on the surface of the water. Trout dry flies types which include Elk Hair Caddis Tan imitate a wide variery of flies and insects which inhabit the surface of the water. There is nothing like using dry flies and watching trout and grayling rise to the surface. To purists dry fly fishing is the true art-form of fly fishing, indeed some rivers only permit dry fly fishing. There are some dry flies (e.g. the Popper, Muddlers) which are designed to attract fish by the action of creating a surface disturbance. The flies are made from very bouyant materials (e.g, cork, ethafoam or deer hair, the latter having a generous application of floatant). A Muddler retrieved upwind of a rise can often result in a bulge in the water as the fish follows the fly. Dry Fly Fishing Techniques With The Elk Hair Caddis Tan A dry fly like Elk Hair Caddis Tan has flotant (Gink is the most popular) warmed in your hand and gently rubbed into the hackles to help Elk Hair Caddis Tan float and they are usually cast singly on a trout tapered leader. A floating line is used, but with the tapered leader de-greased so that it does not glint and flash light spooking the trout Elk Hair Caddis Tan - Fly Tying Dressing Fly Tying Difficulty: 4 For the more adventurous among you we have provided tying specifications for the Elk Hair Caddis Tan. This is a great little storage system to have on your tying desk and makes it so simple to store and use spools of thread, not only that it takes up little more space than the spools but with the 4 raised tiers makes it simple to grab what you need! Spool rack is supplied on its own - threads not included.

The Blae & Black is also known as Duck Fly Blae & Black The Blae and Black is a traditional lough pattern originating in Ireland used now all over the British Isles . The Blae and Black is particularly effective during a rise of chironomid midges. The Blae and Black is well trusted and in Ireland is used in small sizes on the bob, however it is best fished on a small sinking line in a ripple where flies are hatching. It will take trout when n fish are showing. Use The Blae & Black To Catch: The Blae & Black can be used to catch Rainbow Trout The Blae & Black can be used to catch Brown Trout Trout Wet Fly - Blae & Black wet flies like Blae & Black are are range of flies that imitate larva, pupa, drowned adults and Lures The trout finds most of its food beneath the surface of the water, sometimes by grubbing around the weed-beds, at other times by rising in water to take nymphs and pupae on their way to the surface The wet flies which include Blae & Black fall into various categories: larval and pupal forms of various aquatic insects; drowned adults or even swamped stillborn flies; and drowned terrestrials such as beetles. Many do not represent anything in nature, but are classed as attractor flies or lures, designed to tempt the fish to take out of curiosity. A number of the silver-bodied flies can emulate small fry or minnows. Most of the dry flies have a wet-fly equivalents. The use of heavier hooks, softer hen hackles instead of cock, and in the case of winged flies a backward-sloping wing, changes the dry fly into a wet one which sinks below the sufrace of the water. Cock hackles are used for these patterns but they are taken from the very young bird where the individual fibres are very soft. There are two main areas of wet-fly fishing. Firstly, there are the wild rain-fed rivers and streams where it is difficult to see a fish rise let alone see a minute dry fly on the surface. On such waters, wet flies are used almost exclusively upstream and down, as necessity or terrain dictates. The second main area of wet-fly fishing is on atill waters like lakes, lochs and reservoirs, where the angler uses a team of wet flies just below the surface. On wild streams while searching for the natural Brownie, soft-hackled wet flies like the Partridge and Orange, the Snipe and Purple, the Black Spider, a wet Coch-y-Bonddu, and many others are used. 'When do you fish a wet fly, and when a dry?' Always fish a dry-fly pattern when you see a trout rising during a hatch of natural insects. However, when the trout refuses to rise to a dry fly, fishing just below the surface with a wet fly can often work. When no activity is obvious, it is a case for the wet fly, pure and simple. The soft, game-bird hackles of many wet flies have the necessary mobility in the water. They pulsate and 'kick' in the current, attracting the fish by their very movement. They look alive and edible; the two key properties for a successful fly. Wet Fly Blae & Black fishing techniques a technique that has stood the test of time, where the fly (e.g. the Blae & Black) is fished sub-surface and is retrieved slowly using a 'Figure-of-Eight' manipulation of the line in the hand. • Fri, 04 May 2012 09:08:00 +0000: John S has been in touch to say Thanks, flies arrived today and are as usual of high quality. John ordered 3 varieties of Corixa's, which can be used for Rainbow or Brown Trout Fly Fishing. Remember, valued customers, that we love to see pictures of you - fly fishing, fly tying, fly tying materials fishing flies Salmon flies/fly, Fly fishing flies, Trout Flies/fly, fly tying flies, fly
Corixa Gold If you look into the water of virtually any stillwater you will notice the small beetle-like creatures forever rising to the top only shoot back to the bottom in the wink of an eye. These are not beetles but the Corixa imitated well by the Corixa Gold. They are abundant in most stillwater from the smallest pond to the largest lakes and reservoirs, they are an important food source for the trout and must not be ignored by the angler. At close range the Corixa is a striking creature, its back is beautifully marked with dark brown or black dashes with bands of gold. It’s air supply (a small bubble on the underside of its abdomen) when at full capacity looks like a bead of mercury held between the legs. There are quite a few different species of Corixa, but their colour and markings are very similar, so we do not need to go to great lengths to imitate all the species. They do vary a little in size ranging from about 5mm to over 10mm, though the larger species tend to be less abundant. The most common and one usually imitated is about 7mm. Use The Corixa Gold To Catch: The Corixa Gold can be used to catch Rainbow Trout The Corixa Gold can be used to catch Brown Trout Trout Wet Fly - Corixa Gold wet flies like Corixa Gold are are range of flies that imitate larva, pupa, drowned adults and Lures The trout finds most of its food beneath the surface of the water, sometimes by grubbing around the weed-beds, at other times by rising in water to take nymphs and pupae on their way to the surface The wet flies which include Corixa Gold fall into various categories: larval and pupal forms of various aquatic insects; drowned adults or even swamped stillborn flies; and drowned terrestrials such as beetles. Poult Bloa North Country Spider The Poult Bloa is a great traditional northen spider. Anorth great fly from Mike Harding's book on Northern Spider Patterns. The “poult” refers to the feather, which in this case comes from the blue undercovert feathers of a young grouse wing. Edmunds and Lee insist that only a young grouse feather will do because it has the right shade of light slate blue. Ednunds and Lee also insist that all tying thread used in their flies is waxed. This is perhaps because, in their day, the silk then was not as tough as it is now and the wax helped to strengthen it. In the example here Mike Harding has waxed the thread very lightly so as to preserve the colour. • Wed, 02 May 2012 14:47:00 +0000: Matthew C has sent in a fantastic message with some suggestions on how to fish our Sunray Shadow Tube Flies; here's what he has to say - - fly fishing, fly tying, fly tying materials fishing flies Salmon flies/fly, Fly fishing flies, Trout Flies/fly, fly tying flies, fly
"The most effective way I have seen this fished is on Northern Scottish rivers where a riffle loop is placed over the neck of the fly and it is then fished on a short line accross a pool. The knack is to cast out and immediately lift the rod so that just the fly and a couple of feet of leader are in contact with the water. The fly is then skated back over the water, creating quite a wake on the surface, it is then lifted off and cast again. It takes a lot of energy to do this with a double handed rod but the effects are fabulous as it can bring fish right off of the bottom. It also pays to have a second rod standing by with an Allys Shrimp or a Cascade on the line and if movement is seen to retrieve the Sunray Shadow and immediately cast back over the movement with the second rod. As you can imagine it also pays to have a Ghillie with you at this time!" It's no surprise that Matthew has scored this fantastic fly as 5/5!

Sandy Dickson Blank Buster Specimin Hunter Buzzers A 32 Fly Collection In Various Sizes from #10 to #16 Buzzers are midge pupa, they take their name from the buzzing noise they make when in a swarm. Sandy Dickson is on of the top fly designers in the UK and designs flies exclusively for The Essential Fly, critical of buzzers Sandy's Blank Buster Buzzer- Specimin Hunters are designed to imitate as closely as possible the natural buzzers, with hot coloured heads that act as targets for hungry trout. • Mon, 30 Apr 2012 13:29:00 +0000: John R has reviewed his experience with us at The Essential Trout and Salmon Fly Fishing Company (to give us our full name...!) along with his Adams flys that he ordered. John said Bought as one of several flies. All nicely tied. There was a problem with - fly fishing, fly tying, fly tying materials fishing flies Salmon flies/fly, Fly fishing flies, Trout Flies/fly, fly tying flies, fly
Adams created by Leonard Hallady. Adams trout dry fly The Adams dry fly, although invented in the Michigan in the early 1920's however it is still is a modern looking fly. This is a standard fly fishing fly in my fly box and has caught fish all around the world, indeed sales show it is one of the most popular flies world-wide. Use The Adams To Catch: The Adams can be used to catch Cutthroat The Adams can be used to catch Rainbow Trout The Adams can be used to catch Arctic Char The Adams can be used to catch Brown Trout The Adams can be used to catch Grayling As the name indicates dry flies which include Adams are designed to float on the surface of the water. Trout dry flies types which include Adams imitate a wide variery of flies and insects which inhabit the surface of the water. Dry Fly Fishing Techniques With The Adams A dry fly like Adams has flotant (Gink is the most popular) warmed in your hand and gently rubbed into the hackles to help Adams float and they are usually cast singly on a trout tapered leader. A floating line is used, but with the tapered leader de-greased so that it does not glint and flash light spooking the trout Special Fishing Techniques with the Adams Treat the Adams with flotant and leave it to drift on the surface. After a while pull it across the surface for a distance of about 3 feet (1 metre) to make it seem like it is accelerating prior to attempting take-off then stop the retrieve abruptly as if the fly has aborted take-off. Leave the Adams to site for a minute of so longer then move it again. This will often stimulate trout into attacking the fly

  • Wed, 25 Apr 2012 08:26:00 +0000: Peter C has been in touch and written an absolutely fantastic review our some of our flies, specifically our Damsels and Beadhead Bibio's. - fly fishing, fly tying, fly tying materials fishing flies Salmon flies/fly, Fly fishing flies, Trout Flies/fly, fly tying flies, fly
Peter says "In general I am happy with the quality of your flies and the speed and efficiency of your service. The little size 14 Damsels with blue flash particularly impressed me. I buy size 14 goldhead Damsels a dozen a time from [a competitor]. I think yours is a more natural looking product and I look forward to testing it soon. This is the fly I use 80% of the time on small stillwaters in the South East. It is deadly where larger sizes fail, particularly where there is catch and release. The long shank hooks you use means yours are a bit larger than the [competitors] ones. Can you offer a size 16 version? The Diawl Bachs are fine. The goldhead Bibio is an unusual fly not obtainable e.g. from Fastmail. A friend had some last year when we were in Scourie and caught with them. They may be even better in Scottish lochs than the goldhead Diawl Bachs that I usually use on the point - I have caught loads of nice wild brownies with these - and loads with a normal Bibio on the top dropper. I'll try them out at the end of this month and if they work I can recommend them to several friends in Scourie." The Bead Head (BH) Bibio is based on the Bibio created by Major Charles Roberts. The Bead Head (BH) Bibio is also known as Goldhead Bibio Bead Head (BH) Bibio The Bibio was created in the late 1950's or 60's by Major Charles Roberts of the Burrisholle Fishery in Mayo and has received a great deal of attention and usage throughout the UK. It was originally tied to represent the heather beetle for sea-trout on loughs Furnace and Feeagh. The Bibio has now become one of the great Irish wet flies for brown trout, sea-trout & salmon. The Bibio is taken for a large range of dark insects from duckflies to beetles. Water conditions will determine the size of fly to be fished. The Bibio is a good taker of salmon and sea-trout when fished on the dropper on rippled pools in West Ireland rivers. Use The Bead Head (BH) Bibio To Catch: The Bead Head (BH) Bibio can be used to catch Salmon The Bead Head (BH) Bibio can be used to catch Atlantic Salmon The Bead Head (BH) Bibio can be used to catch Rainbow Trout The Bead Head (BH) Bibio can be used to catch Brown Trout The Bead Head (BH) Bibio can be used to catch Sea Trout Bead Head (BH) Bibio lure or Bead Head (BH) Bibio streamer The Bead Head (BH) Bibio is a type of lure or streamer fly. Streamers or lures fall into two categories, imitator streamers or attractor streamers. The Black, Olive, Natural and White Woolly Buggers Zonker are imitator streamers. An imitator streamer represenst a specific type of food, which is preyed upon by the trout, typically a small fish for example. As Trout are territorial and they will defend their territory against invading fish the fly-fishermen can use this knowledge to their advantage. Using an imitator streamer a trout can be fooled into attacking what he thinks is fry invading its territory. The alternative to an imitator fly is an attractor fly or as some fishermen call them 'piss them off fly'. A brightly coloured attractor fly is retrieved past the nose of a large brown trout or rainbow in hiding can excite a trout into striking if it thinks its feeding territory is under attack stimulating a big hit. Sometimes Trout will strike out of simple curiosity just to see if it is edible even though it does not look like their normal food. Sometimes bright, flashy flies drive them crazy or just annoy them. Some for example a Red Zonkers are attractors streamer fly patterns, these are not designed to represent a particular baitfish but to excite a predatory trout into striking using brightly colored and reflective materials in their design. The brass bead head fly types which includes the Bead Head (BH) Bibio has become one of the most popular fly types in overall trout fly sales. This is because the weight of the brass bead helps keep the Bead Head (BH) Bibio very close to the bottom where trout are used to seeing and capturing naturals. The flash of the brass bead in Bead Head (BH) Bibio has also proven to be very attractive to several other kinds of sport fish. Its possible that it just makes the Bead Head (BH) Bibio easier for the fish to locate. Roman Moser states that the roots of the Gold Head or Pearl Head flies lie in the Northern Italian area. At the turn of the century the fishermen of Piemont, Bergamo, Brescia and Friulia fished in their alpine rivers with a bead headed nymph for spin fishing. The beads came from the glass making area of Murano (Venice). This type of nymph was then used by Roman in 1978 when the Roman Moser bottom downstream technique was born as shown in the video "New ways with the caddises and new ways with mayflies". Because the flies were light made of glass Roman experimented with Cabela's spinner bodies made of brass, goldheads were born. Nobody understood this until he published the making of that Gold Head in the German magazine "Fliegenfischer" January/March issue 1985. The article was titled: "New ways of fishing the caddis". He found out that when sedge flies were hatching, the Gold Head was most successfull, possibly because the bead resembled the air bubble thorax of the natural nymph. The beadhead is now used on many types of flies, beadhead nymphs and beadhead lure or beadhead streamers and this the Bead Head (BH) Bibio. Blue Winged Olive In nature the Blue Winged Olive (BWO) or Ephemerella ignita) is a widely distributed fly found on wild streams and more sedate chalk streams. It is easily recogniseable by its three tails (other olives have only two tails). This is an extremely important flyt pattern. Various species of mayfly throughout the world have the name Blue-Winged Olive applied to them. This collection includes all 9 colours of 12/0 Nano Silk, the complete fly tyers collection of Powersilks! WHAT IS NANO SILK BLACK FLY TYING THREAD? For any given thickness Nano Silk is probably the strongest fly tying thread on the planet! Put simply Nano Silk is fine enough to tie on size 32 hooks and strong enough to bend a size 6 hook in the vice! Nano Silk is available in 9 colours including Nano Silk Black and the New Nano Silk Red A MODERN THREAD FOR THE MODERN FLY TYER Many fly tying threads were sourced from the textile industry many years ago and have remained unchanged ever since. Many of these threads are strong enough when used with caution but are prone to snapping at the most inconvenient time (usually just before you whip finish a fly that took 15 minutes to tie!). Nano Silk is a modern hi-tech fibre sourced by the Semper Fli team which is coloured and spooled by us to provide the modern fly tyer with a thread to meet their needs. WHAT CAN NANO SILK BE USED FOR? The fact is it’s really up to you... but here are a few tips and tricks from the Semper Fli team to get you started. Extra strength means flies can be tied “tighter” with more pressure meaning more resilient flies Thread breakage is virtually eliminated Minimum thickness means “thread build up” is no longer an issue. Slim bodied flies are possible even with many turns of silk as Nano Silk adds virtually no bulk. When pulled tight Nano Silk can disappear into the dressing of a fly. Check out the parachute hackles tied using Nano Silk. No need to varnish heads! A simple whip finish can be pulled tight and won’t come undone when fished. Multi-strand structure means thread can be split to form dubbing loops. Nano Silk is so fine it can doubled up midway through dressing a fly to form a dubbing loop without excess build up On complex dressings with many steps half hitches or 2 turn whip finishes can be applied without fear of losing tension or excessive build up CAUTION! Nano Silk is also stronger than many fly tying tools a ceramic fly tying bobbin is recommended

Buzzers are midge pupa, they take their name from the buzzing noise they make when in a swarm. Buzzers hatch out on virtually every day of the year. Normally they are fished as part of a team of flies, with a long leader and very slow retrieve. Sandy Dickson is on of the top fly deisgners in the UK and designs flies exclusively for The Essential Fly, critical of buzzers Sandy's Blank Buster Buzzer- Specimin Hunters are designed to imitate as closely as possible the natural buzzers, with hot coloured heads that act as targets for hungry trout. This is the closest to a natural buzzer you can use without trying to thread a real buzzer onto your hook. Sandy's Blank Buster Buzzer- Specimin Hunter's gives a natural ribbed effect to the fly. This fly has worked wonders on stillwaters, ideally they are fished very slowly on a floating line and as long a leader as you are can use. With its weight the Epoxy Buzzer cuts rapidly through the surface film and gets to fishing depth quickly. A very slow figure-of-eight retrieve is normally best; occasionally if there is a lot of buzzer activity fairly fast stripping can work well. Quite often this will be taken on the drop.

  • Mon, 16 Apr 2012 10:03:00 +0000: Ray P has been in touch following his recent order which included our wonderful Kites Imperial dry flies. Kites Imperial The Imperial or Kites Imperial was created by Major Oliver Kits. The Kites Imperial is an omitation of the dark olive (baetis rhodani). Oliver Kite died in 1968 while on a fishing trip. Use The Kites Imperial To Catch: The Kites Imperial can be used to catch Brown Trout As the name indicates dry flies which include Kites Imperial are designed to float on the surface of the water. Trout dry flies types which include Kites Imperial imitate a wide variery of flies and insects which inhabit the surface of the water. Dry Fly Fishing Techniques With The Kites Imperial A dry fly like Kites Imperial has flotant (Gink is the most popular) warmed in your hand and gently rubbed into the hackles to help Kites Imperial float and they are usually cast singly on a trout tapered leader. A floating line is used, but with the tapered leader de-greased so that it does not glint and flash light spooking the trout Kites Imperial - Fly Tying Dressing For the more adventurous among you we have provided tying specifications for the Kites Imperial. Remember at The Essential Fly we sell the Kites Imperial at incredible prices with a top quality fly and service to back it up. It is certainly worth tying the Kites Imperial yourself to understand the pleasure of catching a fish with your own tied fly, however at the price we sell flies it is only worth tying one or two Kites Imperial as your can spend more time fishing instead of tying flies - buy volume online with us. The Griffith's Gnat is also known as Grey Palmer (Slovenia) Griffith's Gnat The Grffiths Gnat is a universal trout fly and is a fantastic grayling fly. Although called a gnat this is actrually an all purpose dry fly effective on rivers and lakes. It works best in small sizes where it can be suggestive of many different small creatures trapped in the sufrace film. It also makes a very good reporesentation of small chromomid midges in a mating ball. Use The Griffith's Gnat To Catch: The Griffith's Gnat can be used to catch Cutthroat The Griffith's Gnat can be used to catch Rainbow Trout The Griffith's Gnat can be used to catch Arctic Char The Griffith's Gnat can be used to catch Brown Trout The Griffith's Gnat can be used to catch Grayling As the name indicates dry flies which include Griffith's Gnat are designed to float on the surface of the water. Natural insects like ants & bees can be food for trout. Imitation flies like Griffith's Gnat are available imitating the natural insects (Hymenoptera) which are very diverse in appearance. Most hymenopterans have two pairs of membranous wings. It is only usually the ant, grasshopper and bee that are regularly used as sucessful terrestrial imitations like Griffith's Gnat for trout fishing.
